Students in the Advanced German Stream will tackle the more complex topics and language structures through projects, presentations, writing using advanced sentence structures, analyzing a wide variety of sources like poems, articles, books, info-graphics and more as they move through the B1, DSD1 Bridge, B2 and C1 levels. This is an exciting time as many students prepare for the DSD1 and DSD2 exams which demonstrates a high standard in German and is a requirement for entry into the German, Austrian and Swiss university systems. Students in grade 9-12 can also earn Alberta Education High School Credits while enrolled in the advanced stream. Our exam preparation courses are intensive and designed specifically to prepare students for listening comprehension, text analysis, writing letters and essays, interpreting graphs, oral presentations of controversial topics, cultural knowledge and German politics and literature. Course Descriptions

  • The B1 course is for students who have mastered the A2 curriculum and have passed the A2 exam and are Grade 7+. It is divided into two half-courses (B1.1 and B1.2), each of which runs for a full year.

    This course is conducted entirely in German with the exception of grammar, which may be explained in English.

    Students will be exposed to topics such as inventions, nutrition, learning styles, environmental stewardship, national parks, media, employment and consumerism.

    Grammar and new vocabulary are embedded in each unit, and students are expected to give presentations, write paragraphs and letters, create brochures and produce other forms of communication individually and in small groups.

    In this course students will also have the opportunity to play games, listen to German news, read magazine articles and watch German movies.

  • The B2 course is for students who have mastered the B1 curriculum and who have passed the DSDI exam.

    It is a very academic course conducted entirely in German. It is divided into two half-courses (B2.1 and B2.2), each of which runs for a full year.

    Students will grapple with complex topics such as fashion, digital communication, accessibility, immigration, environment, sustainability, technology, psychology, history, economy, employment, politics and German literature.

    Students will expand on their listening and reading comprehension skills, engage in meaningful debates and will use a variety of formats in their written communication.

DSD1 Bridge to B2


 

Course Description

We at CGLS are excited to offer a new course for our students who have completed the B1 series.  Students are expected to bring their creativity as they tackle and complete projects using their German in unique and creative ways.  Students will demonstrate their skills through a variety of mediums and strategies as they problem solve, work together, bring literacy to life, create cultural connections and build on skills from previous courses.  We are excited to see how these students unlock their creative potential and demonstrate their success during their project showcase. 

The DSD1 Bridge will also incorporate the DSDI preparation cycle and exam for those student meeting the exam criteria.

DSD2 Prep


 

Course Description

The DSD 2 course is meant for students who have already attained an B1+/B2 (i.e. low advanced) level of German. The course has two main goals: 1) to expand students' knowledge of German, and 2) to prepare them for the DSD 2 exam. DSD 2 (Deutsches Sprachdiplom 2) is a German language certificate that allows students to study at a university in Germany. The course focuses on the four main language skills that are covered by the DSD 2 exam: Hören (Listening), Sprechen (Speaking), Lesen (Reading), and Schreiben (Writing). A special emphasis is given to test-taking strategies and techniques that allow students to pass the exam successfully.

  • The student minimum age is 14 years old at the time of the exam enrolled at CGLSS.

    This exam certifies that candidates are independent users of the German language.

    Taking the Deutsches Sprachdiplom helps set up our students for success beyond CGLSS.

    A native knowledge of German follows the standards set by the German school curriculum and the CEFR, to further the goal of easy integration into the German School System for returning students and/or to obtain the German Language Certificate (Deutsches Sprachdiplom), which is proof of language proficiency for German, Austrian & Swiss colleges.

    Benefits students wanting to study in Canadian universities by earning foreign language credits before starting their studies.

    Passing the exam demonstrates that you can…

    Understand the main points of information in conversations and texts on familiar matters relating to work, school and leisure time, etc. when clear, standard language is used.

    Deal with most situations typically encountered when travelling in German-speaking countries.

    Express yourself simply and coherently when talking about familiar topics and areas of personal interest.

  • Usually Written in Grade 11 or 12. The student minimum age is 16 years old enrolled at CGLSS.

G10-G30


 

Course Description

Students who want to earn their high school language credit and are currently enrolled in high school grades 9-12 can sign up for our intensive semester courses of G10 no prerequisite or prior German knowledge required, G20 ( G10 perquisite required) or G30 ( G10/20 prerequisite required)  stream.  Our teacher, who is a native German speaker, will introduce students to the many facets of the German language and culture as they work together demonstrating a basic knowledge of the German language at the end of G10, and continuing on in G20 and G30 where students will demonstrate understanding and using sentences and common expressions in everyday situations, make yourself understood in simple, routine situations requiring an exchange of information on familiar and common topics, describe your background and education, immediate surroundings and other matters associated with your immediate needs, in a simple way, and creating cultural connections as a global citizen per the Alberta Education Framework.  These are online live course where students will interact with each other and the teacher regularly through out the week.
